UPDATE: I forgot to rephrase the part "advance Modern Day" in the header. In reality I meant introducing new characters and how the memories will be shown.

So, after Jason Schreier confirmation about next AC in Viking era, I decided to quickly break down all information we have about that era atm. Particularly, from one single source - "Fate of the Gods" novel from Matthew Kirby's "Last Descendants" novel trilogy.

  • Proto-Assassins exist in Viking era, at least around the end of 10th century and in Svealand. They were supporting King Eric the Victorious. There were two 100% known Assassins that time (might be more before and after for sure) - Torgny the Lawspeaker and Thorvald Hjaltason, both were historical characters. And Thorvald had a hidden blade.
  • Proto-Templars also exist and they were heavily influencing Romans and Franks.
  • Harald Bluetooth was being opposed by Assassins and is believed to be influenced by Templars. Moreover, he had a Prong of Eden, which was part of Trident.
  • Thorvald is an ancestor of Javier Mondragon, a teenager who was a main hero and in epilogue he considered to join Assassins. Assuming he has someone else's number whom he wanted to call - it might be Gavin Banks number, or even Victoria, since she joined Assassins.
  • If Sean, another teenager from Last Descendants, could be brought up, his genetic data can be used to explore Harald memories. Styrbjorn the Strong, Sean's ancestor, conceived a child with Harald's daughter Thyra, which allows to explore Harald memories until conceiving Thyra.

Of course right now it can't be said for sure what will be, besides it might be English Vikings... But I feel it will be related to Scandinavia, and having a code-name "Kingdom", I can't help myself but associate Harald Bluetooth with that.

Also, I just remembered another altenative setting and time period, although it's less likely since that era was earlier than Vikings...

The era of King Arthur and Round Table.

It also fits "Kingdom" name, and it's one of the desired settings among fans. Of course in Division 2 poster there is "Valhalla" writing, but Schreier didn't specify the country and time period, so the possibility for King Arthur remains.

Following that, we know from the lore that Arthur possessed Excalibur swords, or Sword of Eden, and he also was a proto-Templar.

Third option could be...

The era of Ragnar Lodbrok, legendary king of Denmark and Sweden.

What are the advantages of this setting?

  • He is another great association with "Kingdom".
  • Dev team can reuse Paris from Unity (with some changes ofc) because of famous Siege of Paris) in 845. It would be unwise to miss such event.
  • As well as Paris, London might also be reused (with changes) because of his Anglo-Saxon raids.
  • He could have a key role in Assassin vs Templar war because of his biography. His actual allegiance can be speculated, but more likely he might be an Assassin because of one single fact - his death: KingÆlla of Northumbriaexecuted Ragnar in 865 by casting him into a pit full of snakes. And, as we know, snakes are the signs of Templars.

You'll be surprised, but there is a fourth option, although it's very specific and detailed. It could be...

Kievan Rus'.

Why? Take a look at this:

The meaning of the word Garðaríki is usually interpreted as garðr + ríki: "the kingdom of cities", or "the realm of towns",[3] which probably referred to a chain of forts along the Volkhov River, starting with Lyubsha and Ladoga (see Evolution of the word Gord#Evolution_of_the_word)). These forts had to assert themselves especially against the Khazar Khaganate until the end of the 9th century and therefore they developed the first East Slavic state which is known as Kievan Rus'.
